Civic Academy

Palm Desert’s Civic Academy is a free and interactive way for community members to get first-hand knowledge on our city government's many civic processes and daily functions.

This dynamic multi-week program will give an insider's view of the City and its functions through hands-on demonstrations, presentations, and tours.

The Academy will give participants the opportunity to grow in their leadership skills, analyze issues using data, connect with decision-makers, and learn how they can make a difference in our community.

Program Schedule

Civic Academy is held on five consecutive Monday evenings, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be provided from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m.

City Manager, City Clerk, Library Services, Homelessness Issues, History of Palm Desert

Session 2: Balancing & Building Palm Desert

Finance, Economic Development, & Capital Projects

Session 3: Developing Palm Desert

Planning, Code Compliance, & Affordable Housing

Mission for the Civic Academy

The City of Palm Desert’s Civic Academy is designed to strengthen our community by giving residents a behind-the-scenes look at how their local government works. Through engaging sessions with City leaders and staff, participants gain a deeper understanding of City services, decision-making, and long-term planning efforts that shape Palm Desert. The Academy fosters meaningful connections between neighbors and City staff, empowers residents to engage thoughtfully in civic life, and helps build a tight-knit, informed community invested in the City’s future.

Participant Eligibility

Priority will be given to Palm Desert residents who are registered to vote within our city. We encourage non-residents to apply, particularly those who conduct business or attend school in our city.

Must not be running for, or currently serving in, a political office.

Must be willing to attending all sessions. Participants can miss one session and still receive a certificate of completion.

Sessions are held Monday evenings. Dinner is served 5:00-5:30 and the program runs from 5:30-7:30.

Sessions are held at various City-owned locations. A final schedule will be provided during session one.

Graduates will be recognized at a future City Council Meeting following completion of the Academy.

Those selected to participate in the program must agree to keep all questions and comments nonpartisan.
