On January 25, 2024, the City Council of Palm Desert passed Ordinance No. 1406, which creates five single-member council districts. The current council members will remain in office until the end of their terms.

The shift to district-based elections will start with the General Municipal Election on November 5, 2024. During this election, residents will vote for council members in Districts 1, 2, and 3. The transition will be completed with the November 2026 election, when residents of Districts 4 and 5 will elect their council members.

The Palm Desert City Council has recently approved a pilot program for the electronic filing of campaign finance statements. The public can view both electronic and paper-filed statements through the public access portal linked below. Note that the electronic filing system includes statements from the calendar year 2023 onwards. For older statements, please use the City’s public records system, also linked below.

Do:

• Always obtain the permission of the property owner first.
• On streets with sidewalks, place signs beyond the sidewalk, away from the street.
• On streets without sidewalks, place the closest part of the sign at least ten feet back from the face of the curb.
• Keep medians, utility poles, and City-owned property completely free of signs.
• In City-owned residential housing, place signs in the windows of the units. They are not permitted in common areas or outside of the residential units.

Do Not:

• Install less than 10 feet from the curb.
• Attach to utility poles, traffic sign poles, or other signs.
• Install in medians or on City-owned property.
• Leave signs up more than 30 days after the election.

Enforcement:

• Non-complying signs that create a threat to public safety will be removed.
• Candidates with non-complying signs will be given 24 hours to remove the sign, or the City may abate the signs.
• Space permitting, removed signs will be kept at City Hall for two weeks and may be retrieved at 73510 Fred Waring Drive during normal business hours.

The City Clerk oversees local elections and works closely with the Riverside County Registrar of Voters to manage municipal elections. Responsibilities include:

• Preparing resolutions for general and special elections.
• Managing the candidate nomination process.
• Handling initiatives, referendums, and recall petitions.
• Officially announcing election results.
