The City of Palm Desert was incorporated on November 26, 1973, as a general law city. In 1997, voters approved a transition to charter city status. In accordance with the City Charter, the City Council is Palm Desert’s governing body, consisting of five members elected to four-year terms. Each year, the Mayor is selected from among the Council to serve a one-year term.

The City Council enacts ordinances and establishes policies that guide the operations of the city. It also represents the public while maintaining relationships with other government agencies.
