Recycle Unwanted Electronics at Palm Desert’s Free E-Waste Event

Residents and businesses can drop off electronics, batteries, light bulbs, and more on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Civic Center Park.

Old phones, outdated computers, unused electronics, and those mystery cords collecting in a drawer can all find a more responsible destination at Palm Desert’s free Electronic Waste Collection Event.

The event will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Civic Center Park. Palm Desert is partnering with Desert Arc Recycling to give residents and businesses a convenient way to recycle unwanted electronics while helping keep potentially harmful materials out of landfills.

Electronic devices can contain valuable materials that can be recovered through responsible recycling, along with substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium that should be kept out of soil and groundwater. Proper processing helps conserve resources while reducing the environmental impact of discarded electronics.

Desert Arc Recycling, the City’s partner for the event, also creates employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

A wide range of items will be accepted, including televisions; microwave ovens and small appliances; computers, printers, copiers, and accessories; cell phones, tablets, cameras, and video game systems; stereo equipment and radios; vacuum cleaners; non-lithium batteries with both terminals taped; and light bulbs.

Large appliances, including refrigerators, dryers, and stoves, cannot be accepted.

Although light bulbs and non-lithium batteries are not officially classified as electronic waste, they will also be collected for recycling during the event. Residents bringing batteries should make sure both terminals are taped before drop-off.

Businesses are welcome to participate as well. Those bringing more than 20 items should schedule an appointment in advance by calling Desert Arc Recycling at 760-404-1370.

The Electronic Waste Collection Event is free and runs from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Civic Center Park.
