Emergency preparedness can feel overwhelming, but getting ready often begins with a few practical steps. This September, Palm Desert residents can learn what those steps look like, meet the people and agencies that may assist during a disaster, and explore preparedness resources in a hands-on setting.
The City of Palm Desert will mark National Preparedness Month with a free Emergency Readiness Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Palm Desert Community Center, 43900 San Pablo Ave.
Built around the theme “Preparedness Starts With You,” the Expo is designed to make disaster readiness approachable, useful, and easier to put into practice at home. The City is partnering with the Riverside County Emergency Management Department and the Desert Recreation District to bring together local agencies, first responders, community partners, and preparedness vendors in one location.
Throughout the event, residents can take part in hands-on demonstrations and educational stations focused on practical emergency preparation. Response vehicles and equipment will be available to see up close, and participating agencies will be on hand to answer questions, explain their roles during emergencies, and help residents better understand the resources available before, during, and after a disaster.
Visitors can also pick up preparedness information, resources, and free items while supplies last.
The Expo will include activities specifically designed to help younger residents learn about preparedness in an engaging way. With support from the Palm Desert Library, the “Ready Trainer Zone: Prepare, Practice & Play” will put a Pokémon GO-inspired spin on emergency readiness.
The concept is built around a simple message: “Trainers prepare for battles. Families prepare for disasters.” Through games and activities, children can become more familiar with preparedness concepts while parents and caregivers explore ways to make emergency planning part of everyday family life.
Although the Expo includes plenty for children and families, the event is intended for residents of all ages. Emergency planning can look different from one household to another, and the Expo provides an opportunity to ask questions, learn about local resources, and identify practical steps that make sense at home.
For some residents, that may mean reviewing household plans or learning what supplies to keep on hand. For others, it may mean becoming more familiar with local emergency agencies, seeing response equipment firsthand, or simply knowing where to turn when additional information is needed.
The goal is not just to hand out preparedness materials, but to give residents a chance to talk, explore, and leave with information they can actually use.
The Emergency Readiness Expo is free, and no advance registration is required. Residents may stop by anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Palm Desert Community Center, 43900 San Pablo Ave.
